I recalled that some time ago I created this wiki with experiences for teaching, studying and working abroad. Some of these experiences have already been posted here on the site, but others have not. Feel free to check them out if you are interested. :-)

Travel Opportunities for Teachers, Spanish Speaking (& Neighboring) Countries
Here are several opportunities for teaching/learning in Spanish speaking (and neighboring) countries.Application fees are free or minimal in cost and stipends are provided. Please feel free to view and add more by commenting. ¡Gracias!

Spain


  • CIEE: Teach in Spain

    Description: Serve as an assistant to a classroom teacher providing English as a Foreign Language instruction.
    Duration: Academic year, September 1- June 30
    Stipend: 700 euros monthly (~ $900). Health insurance is included.
    Costs: $50 Application fee. Participant pays $1,100 placement fee after acceptance as well as airfare, travel and associated visa costs.
    CIEE also offers a program to teach English in Business settings, but the stipulations vary slightly. Visit the page for further info.

  • Bilingual English Development and Assessment (BEDA) Program

    Description: Conversational English assistants are placed in bilingual Catholic schools throughout Europe to aid in the teaching of English.
    Duration: Academic year, September 1-June 30
    Stipend: From 690-1040 euros (~$ 900-1,358) monthly depending on number of hours worked. Health insurance is included.
    Costs: Free application. Participant pays airfare, travel and associated visa costs.

    Duration: Varies based upon program
    Stipend: 700 euros monthly (~$900- teaching in Spain)
    Costs: Free application. Participant pays $700 placement fee after acceptance as well as airfare, travel, health insurance and associated visa costs.

    Description: Serve as an assistant to a classroom teacher providing English as a Foreign Language instruction.

    Stipend: Chile: 430,000 CLP monthly (~$885); DR: $350-450 monthly
    Costs: $50 Application fee. Participant pays $1,000+ placement fee after acceptance as well as airfare, travel and associated visa costs. Health insurance is included.

  • Toyota International Teacher Program, Costa Rica

    Description: Secondary teachers collaborate and complete projects related to environmental change.
    Duration: 2-3 weeks during varied points throughout the year.
    Stipend: $500 to help defray costs to teacher’s during the school year.
    Costs: All expenses included, except pre-departure needs (i.e. passports, immunizations, etc.)
  •  American Councils/Fulbright, Uruguay Educator Exchange Program

    Description: Teachers from Uruguay and the US complete visiting cultural exchange to collaborate regarding ideas and classroom projects for cross-cultural learning.
    Duration: Each educator spends a 3 week period in the other country during their respective summer months.
    Stipend: $1450- $600 travel expenses, $600 hosting expenses, $250 classroom materials. Housing, health insurance and airfare. Exchange teacher stays with US host teacher during his/her visit.
    Costs: Free application.

  • Murdock-Thompson Foundation for Teachers

    Description: Murdock-Thompson supports positive advancements in education by strengthening teachers' abilities to promote change. The foundation awards grants for projects in various fields for driven projects.

    Costs: Free application

  • IREX: Teachers for Global Programs (Morocco and Brazil, “neighboring countries”)

    Description: “Aimed at globalizing teaching in the classroom.” Middle/high school math, science, social studies, English and ESL teachers are eligible. Pre-departure online course and sessions in Washington, D.C. required.
    Duration: 2-3 weeks depending on departure date.
    Stipend: All costs- airfare, housing, health insurance, classroom materials- provided.
    Costs: Free application fee. No other costs noted.


  • STARTALK

    Description: Hosted by Indiana University, Bloomington, this federally funded program provides coursework and activities for less commonly taught languages: Arabic, Chinese,Persian, Turkish, and Swahili.
    Duration: There are online and onsite program components from May-August. Check site for specific dates.
    Stipend: Graduate credits, travel, tuition, room & board costs provided by program. Costs: No other associated fees.

  • English-Speaking Union’s British Universities Summer School Scholarship (United Kingdom)

    Description: English-themed study at University of Oxford, Shakespeare Globe Center or Scottish Universities Summer School for English, social studies and performing arts teachers.
    Duration: 3-6 weeks of summer
    Stipend: Travel, tuition, room & board costs provided by program. Graduate credit available.
    Costs: No other associated fees.
