(Virtual) Central American Environment Workshop via UGA

Travel 'virtual'ly anywhere during the COVID-19 crisis. Check out this online learning experience coming up soon.

Virtual Summer Teachers' Institute: Central America: People and the Environment

To be held the week of June 8-12, 2020 from The University of Georgia, Athens

Due to disruptions and safety concerns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic The University of Georgia’s (UGA) Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute (LACSI) will not host the annual Summer Teachers’ Institute in-person, as originally planned.  Nevertheless, we remain firmly committed to providing our community of teachers with timely, high-quality professional development opportunities.
In conjunction with co-sponsors Vanderbilt and Tulane, UGA-LACSI will offer a FREE online workshop to explore topics, resources, and instructional methods related to the institute theme, Central America: People and the Environment. In light of the the unprecedented scheduling challenges that many of you face we will honor the dates originally planned for the Summer Institute. This 4-day virtual workshop will be held during the week of June 8-12.
The second of a four-year series, the 2020 Virtual Summer Institute will highlight diverse topics related to Central America and provide teacher participants with training in Instructional Conversations (IC) pedagogy, pioneered by faculty in UGA’s College of Education. Participants will explore issues such as climate change and the impacts of deforestation, ethnobotany, environmental politics and sustainability, and community resource management. The institute is ideal for educators of high school and community college, and pre-service students teaching History, World Geography, Science, and Environmental Science. Teacher participants will work together in virtual breakout groups to develop shared, subject-specific IC lessons based on institute content and corresponding to grade appropriate educational standards. Participants and organizers will also explore ways of integrating digital tools and technologies to facilitate and improve education via online formats.
We will communicate further program and schedule details for the Virtual Summer Teachers' Institute to registered teachers in the coming weeks.
You will be notified by email within 48 hours after completing your registration.
Interested teachers can find additional information about the Instructional Conversations program and pedagogy at: https://coe.uga.edu/events/clase-professional-development
We hope to see you in June!
